Welcome to Furness Music Centre. We are a true community music centre in the Furness Peninsula in South Cumbria, catering for all ages and abilities of people who want to make music with others.

If you are an orchestral or choral musician, you may like to join one of our groups at our Saturday Music School, and enjoy ensemble music or singing in a choir. If you a music lover who is looking to learn more about concerts in the region, there are many events throughout the year that you are welcome to attend, and we are certain that you will find something to suit your musical preference!

We also offer a two year twilight study course for the GCSE Music qualification - open to all ages.

  • Mike Brewer's Big Bank Holiday Sing! May Day Weekend 2010, Dowdales Hall, Dalton-in-Furness. Saturday May 1st rehearsals with FMC ensembles only - 9am Orchestra. 11.30am Welsh Tour Orchestra. 2.30-5.30pm Community Choir. Sunday May 2nd - Workshop and concert for singers of all ages from across the North West. Registration 10.00am. Vocal workshops Sat 11-5pm with break for lunch. Dress:  Smart Casual. Soundcheck for everyone 3-5pm. Concert 7pm, Dowdales School, Dalton. FREE for FMC members and FREE for children under 10. Workshop fee - £10 non-members. Choral Concert - £5 includes refreshments.
  • JAMES GALWAY CONCERT May 12th Subsidised Trip to Bridgewater Hall in Manchester to hear perhaps the greatest flautist of our time. Departs Dowdales 3.45pm. £21. Free Luxury Coach Transportation provided.
  • Faure's Requiem & Cantique de Jean Racine. June 4th - Combined local choirs, Ulverston Parish Church, 7.30pm
  • Chamber Music & solo works for Cello, Flute and Turntable!  June 10th 9.30pm til late. Natalie Clein and Thomas Carroll, cellos; Anastasia Micklethwaite, flute; HMV Gramophone,Turntable; Tamsin Waley-Cohen, violin; Anthony Hewitt, piano.  Exciting new works by Shiva Feshareki, plus yummy French and Latin American vibes, all performed in a stunning lantern-lit setting at the Lanternhouse, Ulverston. Tickets £10, students £4, Under 16s £1
  • Conducting Day with Colin Touchin. Saturday June 12th. FMC members only. 9am orchestra. 12pm Tour Orchestra. 1.30pm Choir
  • 8th Annual Dalton Pop Proms & BBQ. June 30th 2010, 7pm. Dowdales. Tickets £4 includes tea/coffee. Under 10s go free.
  • WELSH TOUR July 10th - 14th 2010. Discover a whole new aspect of this lovely country through music.
  • Come & Play Sibelius Orchestral Greats.  September 19th at Furness Music Centre with Barrow Festival Orchestra and Anthea Bremner. Workshop by invitation. FREE CONCERT at 4.30pm in The Muse, Dowdales School
  • FIRST EVER Annual Awards Dinner &Choral Concert. October 16th. Fiery Furness directed by John Powell and FMC Community Choir perform at The Coot on the Tarn, Great Urswick. Concert 7pm. Dinner with music - 9pm. All proceeds to Friends of Furness Music Centre - registered charity. Tickets £25 (non members) / £20 (members). Concert only - £10.  Black Tie. 
  • Sharon's Birthday Sing - November 27th 2010. Come and learn Roger Jones' new musical "Two Sisters & a Funeral" in a choral workshop and join Sharon in her celebrations at Abbey Rd Baptist Church on Saturday afternoon and evening
  • Dickensian Festival & Christmas Lights Switch On - Sunday November 28th - Community Sings in Ulverston and Chamber groups and singers perform locally
  • 8th Annual Christmas Carol Service & Concert - December 9th. 5pm sound check. 7pm service/concert Dalton Parish Church. Admission FREE. Arrive early to guarantee a seat. Charity collection for local homeless shelters and music projects.
  • Carols at the Forum - December 11th morning. Christmas Carols Sung and played by FMC for all. Forum 28
  • London Choral Trip - April 1st-3rd 2011. Singing at The Actor's Church in Covent Garden, Shopping & Show in London's West End
  • Rotary Choral Concert - April 6th. All choir members who go to London are involved with this charity concert. 7pm, Barrow. Venue TBD.
  • Over The Sands - May 6th 2011. Choral Event in Morecambe for everyone in Furness Community Choir. Coach from Dowdales 4:00pm. Concert - 7.30pm Morecambe Central Methodist Church.
  • FRENCH TOUR July 15th - 21st 2011. Normandy, Paris and EuroDisney.  £400-450 inclusive of everything except wine!

Get Ahead with GCSE Music

Thursdays 4 - 6.30pm, Dowdales School

BRAND NEW 2 Year Course involving performance, composition and listening. Covers a wide range of music and genres. This is an EXPRESS course - Students should play an instrument or sing solo confidently, and read music.  New candidates now being accepted for next course beginning September 2010. Fee £60 per term plus exam entry and text books.

 

 

VOCAL MASTERCLASSES with JOHN POWELL

Acclaimed Choral Director, Singing Teacher and Bass-Baritone, John Powell will be leading 2 Masterclasses in Voice in 2010.  This is a remarkable opportunity for Young Singers to gain experience in a friendly, open environment. Applications for the June class are now closed. Applications for the Lieder/Opera/Oratorio Class must received in writing by September 15th.

Friday June 25th 6-9pm, The Muse, Dowdales School - Young Singers (13-18) - open choice of song

Friday October 15th - 6-9pm, The Muse, Dowdales School  - College Level & Young Professionals - German Leider & Opera/Oratorio Arias

Singers wishing to take part should write to The Director at Furness Music Centre (Nelson St, Dalton-in-Furness LA15 8AH or email info@furnessmusiccentre.com), completing the official application form and indicating how they believe the class will benefit them. 2 additional copies of all songs are required on application for submission for the official accompanist and the tutor.  

There is a £10 admin fee to take part in the Lieder /Opera Class, with a retiring charity collection for audience members. Cheques should be payable to "Friends of Furness Music Centre". Application forms can be received by emailing info@furnessmusiccentre.com or calling 01229 469812
